The Benefits of Hemp Clothing: A Beginner's Guide
What hemp fabric is
Hemp clothing is made from the fibres of the hemp plant. It has been used for textiles for thousands of years and is valued for its strength, breathability and the relatively low inputs needed to grow the crop.
Strong and long-lasting
Hemp fibre is notably strong, and hemp garments are known for durability. Like linen, hemp tends to soften with washing and wear while holding up well over time.
Breathable and seasonal
Hemp breathes well and manages moisture, which makes it comfortable in warm conditions. It is often blended with cotton to balance softness and structure, though 100% hemp fabrics are also available.
A low-input crop
Hemp typically requires relatively little water and few inputs compared with some other fibre crops, which is part of why it is often discussed as a more sustainable option. As always, certification and supply-chain transparency are what turn a general claim into a verifiable one.
