Cotton French Terry: What It Is and Why It's Used in Hoodies
What French terry is
French terry is a knit fabric with soft loops on the inside face and a smooth surface on the outside. It is most often made from cotton and is a common choice for sweatshirts, hoodies and relaxed loungewear.
Why it is used in hoodies
The looped construction gives French terry a soft hand and a comfortable, mid-to-heavy weight without the bulk of brushed fleece. Many people prefer it year-round because it feels substantial but still breathes.
Brushed vs unbrushed
Some French terry is brushed on the inside for extra softness and warmth. Unbrushed terry keeps the distinct loop texture. Both can be made entirely from cotton with no synthetic blend.
What to look for
Check the GSM for weight and the composition for a true 100% cotton make. Heavier terry (around 400 to 500 GSM) feels structured and premium.
