Understanding OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on Clothing Labels
What OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an independent testing and certification system for textiles. A product carrying it has been tested against a defined list of substances that are restricted or harmful, across the components of the article.
What it tests for
The standard screens for a range of regulated and harmful substances in the finished textile. The testing is updated over time as regulations and research evolve, and certification is issued by authorised institutes.
What it does and doesn't tell you
It tells you the textile has been tested for harmful substances to a recognised standard. It is not a claim about organic status (that is GOTS) or about a garment's overall environmental footprint. It is specifically about substance testing.
Why it is a useful signal
Because it is independent and documented, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 gives you something verifiable on the label. A brand using the claim should be able to point to its certificate.
