What GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton Actually Means

What GOTS is

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. It is widely regarded as the leading certification for textiles made from organic fibres, and it covers the entire supply chain rather than just the raw cotton.

What it covers

To carry GOTS certification, a product must meet criteria for organic fibre content, restricted chemical inputs in processing, wastewater treatment, and social standards for workers. Certification is verified by independent bodies that issue a scope certificate naming the certified parties.

Why it is more than a logo

Because GOTS audits processing and not only the fibre, it gives a fuller picture than made with organic cotton alone. A genuine GOTS claim can be traced to a current scope certificate.

How to verify it

Reputable brands can provide their scope certificate on request. If you want to confirm a claim, ask for it; transparency is the point of the standard.
